Message from the Principal

Principal's Message

The days may be getting shorter in relationship to the number of hours of sunlight but that has not slowed things down at Alexandra.  The girls volleyball team is up and running and will be participating in some exhibition games against some of the  other schools in Owen Sound.  You are welcome to come and cheer them on.
Alexandra has partnered up with the Canadian Mental Health Association to promote mental health and emotional wellness awareness in our school community.  This initiative is made possible by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.  Thank you to those who filled out and returned the surveys last month.  The primary classes will learn about such things as bullying, divorce and peer pressure through puppet plays.  The junior and intermediate grades will develop self-awareness, coping strategies and critical thinking skills through presentations on physical health and healthy eating, body image, healthy relationships and goal setting to name a few.  We are very fortunate to be able to be part of this program.
Progress reports will be coming home on November 11th.  This is a great opportunity to sit down with your child and their teacher and set some goals for academic, personal and social growth for the year.   Interviews will be the evening of November 17th and the morning of November 18th.  Please call the office to arrange a time.  We look forward to seeing you then.
Our Remembrance Day Service will start at 10:30 a.m. on November 11th.   Our students always do a beautiful job with this assembly and we would like to invite all community members to join us for this important day.
We are starting our series of “Family Nights” this month.  Our first one is going to be a Family Math Night.  If you just got a sick feeling in your stomach when you read the word “math” then you should definitely come to this.  It is really important to our students that they learn that math is about logic and patterns and that we can all understand and do math.  The Family Math Night is November 23rd.  More information will be coming home closer to the date.
Finally, the biannual 7/8 Ottawa trip is happening in June 2017.  There will be many fundraising activities throughout the year.  The first one is a Hot Dog Day on November 17th.  Please watch for info in your child’s planner.
Don’t forget that November 18th is a PD Day.  This is to accommodate Parent/Teacher interviews.
